Blue is the theme of her life. Wrapped in a blue pure wool
quilt on her round bed wearing dark blue eye covers, Yodupa was sleeping. The
windows of her room which had silver panes with the blue borders were open due
to which wind was coming inside the room. The dupatta tied on one of the bed
leg was flowing in air along with her silky black long hair which were mischievously
disturbing her sleep by coming over her eyes. There were class X books of NCERT
science and mathematics on her bedside table, a half drunk glass of almond milk
and a bunch of sticky notes on blue wall of room. One of the sticky note says
“Just say it, before it becomes too late”. A blue Barbie themed calendar hung
on the same wall had some dates circled in the March month, for her high school
board exams. An innocent and cute smile arrived on her face as if she is
experiencing emotions of care and love in her dream, and bang!!
“Yodupa, wake
up. Wake up or else you are going to miss your exam.”. Her mom shaking her with
at most force to woke her up. She wakes up with her cute smile disappearing
into an irritated and tired face. Coming out of the bed in her blue night suit
with black frills. She wished her mom while getting ready, “Good Morning, Maa”.
Her mom clearing her table replied her, “Morning, get ready fast. And why is
this milk not finished. You are not any privileged billionaire; your father
works hard for all this”. Thinking of why didn’t she threw that milk in the
rose plant kept outside her window in order to avoid the scolding, in a guilt
filled voice she replied while brushing, “Sorry Maa, I will finish from next
time, I was full last night”. Her mom asked her to get ready fast for breakfast,
and left the room with that hopeless and lot of work look. We all know that
look of our mothers’ right!!
After giving
her last board exam, Yodupa was returning from her school along with her best
friend Anamika. Both of them had known each other since kinder garden days.
More than their own, they know about their friend’s family. The two besties are
walking towards their home, discussing about how are they going to celebrate
their high school graduation, when Parth called them. Parth has been their
classmate since childhood and Yodupa has been crushing on her since class V,
when he gave his homework to her and got beaten by their mathematics teacher
himself. However, she has been silent about her feeling with him and we all
know why. “Better be friends then nothing.”
“Hi guys. We
are thinking of going to a trip to Shimla coming weekend. Are you both interested?”
Parth asked to the girls. Anamika clutches Yodupa’s hand indicating her to
control the excitement and replies with a straight face, “We have to ask our
parents.” Parth with a little disappointment gives both of them a voucher for
the trip and left as one of his friends called. Yodupa kept the voucher
carefully in the upper pocket of her blue bag and scolded Anamika for replying
rudely to Parth. “I was not rude okay. I just wanted to hide your excitement to
avoid awkwardness. Okay, see you in the evening.” Anamika said as she went to
her home while Yodupa has to walk a distance of two more houses to reach her
home.
While setting up the table for dinner in order to help
her mother after she got the lecture on how she is a grown up now and should
learn house chores, Yodupa asked her father who was busy watching TV, “Papa,
can I go for a trip to Shimla this weekend. Our classmates are going and we
have just got over with our exams. Can I go please.” Before he could even
reply, her mom said “How much will it cost and for how many days?” In an
irritated voice she replied to her “I don’t know all the details. If you both
allow at first, then I will get all the information.” While putting some dal,
rice and mango pickle in her plate she went to her room while saying “You don’t
worry about money, I will pay with my saving from pocket money.” Her mother in
an angry mood tells her father “Look at her attitude, no respect or concern. I
am worried.” His father while eating his food and scrolling down the phone
replies “She is a teen Sadhana. Weren’t you little spoiled and rebel at that
age? Ask Anamika’s parents if they are allowing her, if yes then let her go.”
“You spoil her, I don’t know what she will do in future, dance over our heads.”
She went into the kitchen to get some hot chappati, blabbering to herself.
Sipping her cold coffee, Anamika tries to take a bite
of Yodupa’s blueberry cheese which she resists by hitting her hand. “Order one
for yourself.” Yodupa teases Anamika. “So you are going to irritate me like
this for the whole journey until Shimla” says Anamika. “Yeah Ami, what are
friends for”. Yodupa says while finally feeding her a spoon of blueberry cake.
The two friends had managed to convince their parents and came for the trip.
After reaching Shimla, all the teenagers got settled
in their rooms. Anamika and Yodupa were in same room, Parth was sharing a room
with his friend Yash, just next to the girls. Travelling has made everyone
tired, both the girls changed into their comfy sleeping clothes and were about
to sleep just then there was a knock on the door. “Hey, we are planning a
bonfire at night be there around 8.” says Parth. “Cool. We will come. Can we
take rest now?” says Anamika and shuts the door with sleepy eyes.
“Ami. Should I
wear this yellow one or that blue?” Yodupa asks Anamika in excitement and
nervousness. “Yellow one. This is cute and colour also suites you. And you will
get some break from your all time blue.” she replies. “Blue is my favourite.
Okay. I shine in blue. But for a change I shall wear this yellow one.” Yodupa
replies to Ami and defends her love for blue.
The arrangement
for bonfire was beautiful. White cushion beds with red pillows, barbeque stand
and some wine. Music was handled by Yash who was sitting on one corner with his
Bluetooth speakers trying to adjust the volume and playlist according to the
mood. All the youth full of hope and energy came for bonfire and comforted
themselves. “Let’s play truth and dare.” Rhea says, one of their classmates.
“It’s a cliché game man. Same dares and wrong answers. Some other game please.”
Yodupa suggested. “Yedi. Don’t be boring, it is a nice game.” Anamika insisted
in her little drunk voice. All others also affirmed with her and the game
started. There were some interesting truths that came out about their school
teachers, first crushes and some embarrassing dares including dancing with wine
bottle over heads. “Rotate the bottle with little more force. All should get
the chance.” said Anamika in even more drunken condition. “Ami. I think we
should go. You need some sleep now.” Yodupa said as she holds her hand. At that
moment the bottle stops rotating, pointing towards her and Parth. Yash with a
happy but with little witty smile says, “You will take dare right, Parth?”.
“Yeah. Anything is fine.” he replies. Yash whispers something in Yodupa’s ears
suggesting her some dare. Yodupa with a blank voice agrees to that and dares
Parth to propose a girl from the group. “Any girl from all of us.” She ends
here dare statement. Yash and Parth shares a look and then he sits on his knees
in front of Yodupa with a rose in his hand and asks her “Will you be my partner
for life?”
“Yes.” said
Yodupa with a blank face with no happiness or charm in her voice. The boy she
has been crushing on since class V has proposed her and she agreed to it but
there was no emotion, no excitement. Everyone felt a little awkward, Parth
breaks a silence, “I think it’s a bit of a surprise for you. I am glad you
agreed. We can talk about it tomorrow. You and Anamika should go now.” “Sure.” replies Yodupa while snatching phone
from Anamika’s hand who was drunk dialing their mathematics teacher and asking
him to return her red pen. “What are you doing? Let’s go and sleep.” says
Yodupa. Two girls went to their room and slept.
“What the hell?
What happened to you? Did I hurt you? Was I that drunk?” shouts Anamika. “Why
are you yelling in the morning? You were too drunk last night, so I bring you
to room.” replies Yodupa in sleepy voice. “Yedi, your leg is full of blood your
bedsheet is almost red.” shouts Anamika again. “What rubbish? I don’t feel
anything. Stop scaring me for no reason.” says Yodupa, waking up and watching
her foot and bedsheet soaked in red blood with has dried. She sees a piece of glass
stuck in her foot and pulls that out leading to more bleeding from her leg and
threw it in dustbin beside her bed. She is silent with no emotions and casually
says “Oh. It was this glass. There was broken bottles at bonfire yesterday
might have got it from there.” While coming out of bed, looking at her bed
expressionless and watching her sandals, she went to the bathroom while saying
“Look my sandals also has blood. I hurt myself yesterday at bonfire only, I am
sure. Shit, in all this I forgot to tell you a news. You were too drunk to
notice, Parth proposed to me yesterday and I said yes.” Anamika was standing in
shock with her water bottle in her hand, trying to comprehend what she just
saw. “You just pulled a glass out of your leg without even an expression.” she
said in the most shocking voice. Yodupa replies from bathroom “Look how strong
I am.” Anamika looking the bedsheet and sandal, adds more “You were bleeding
whole night Yedi, how did you sleep, you did not felt anything?” While wearing
her blue crop top, Yodupa was going to reply Anamika but then suddenly she
shouts in pain and falls.
“Are you okay
now?” asks doctor to Yodupa. “You got unconscious, it was a deep cut and blood
loss.” he adds. “I think I am okay.” Yodupa in her weak and confused voice
replied. “Thank god, you are fine. What happened to you? You didn’t tell anyone
about hurting your foot. You just slept like that.” asks Parth with Anamika
standing beside him, who were there whole while doctor was treating Yodupa. “I
don’t know. I did not felt anything. It was just after I changed, it started
hurting and I fell down. It’s all confusing.” says Yodupa. “It’s okay. Don’t
stress. But I hope your answer to my proposal yesterday was not in confusion.”
Parth says with little shyness and moving his hand over his hair. “Hehe. No, it
is a yes.” replies Yodupa with little
blushing.
Somewhere in
the woods in Shimla, a man in fur jacket with a stick in his hand and bended
back says to his master “I think she might realize her power soon. She was
without blue last night.”
“We have been
waiting for this since 17 years. I think now is time to take some action.”
Master replies with vicious spark in his eyes and a blue pendant in his hand
