I am normally not a big fan of South Indian movies but recently I watched something which changed my mind. KGF is an Indian Kannada-language period action film written and directed by Prashant Neel, and produced by Vijay Kiragandur under the banner Hombale films. The movie is made is 2 parts like we had Bahubali. First part named KGF-Chapter1 was released on 21st December 2018 and the second installment will be released in probably 2019 (No official dates are announced). The movie revolves around Raja Krishnappa Bairya, who is born in poverty, raised by a single mother and then his ambitiousness and his last promise to his dying mother drives him to become the biggest goon in Bombay known as “Rocky”.
The movie has a lot of characters, keeping in mind the second installment. The introduction of all the characters is very quick and confusing. Also, I find some actors of nearly the same faces and can’t make out the real character. (Am I the only one?) . No doubt, the action scenes are fantastic and realistic (not like most of the south Indian movies). What I like the most was the cinematography and art direction. The movie has a Nonlinear screenplay. It starts with A death warrant signed for the killing of India’s biggest criminal Rocky (played by actor Yash). Then the story switches to the childhood of protagonist who is surviving with difficulty with his mother then again shifts to Bombay when the character is called Rocky and the memories and teachings of Rocky’s mother is shown in flashback. The mother-son relationship is very beautifully portrayed which makes the character interesting and generous when he sees a poor lady with his infant. Before the interval, a full emphasis has been paid on the development of the protagonist from an innocent child to a monstrous and notorious goon “Rocky”. The character opposite to Rocky is of Reena (played by Sindhu Shetty), who is a daughter of a Bombay’s mafia leader. After the interval, the movie background and sets seem to be inspired by famous Hollywood flick Mad Max: The Fury Road. The main premises which define the movie name is Kolar Gold Fields (KGF). The full movie is a description of events already occurred between 1951 and the present day, by Journalist Anand Ingalagi.
His book EL-Dorado has details of these events and his getting banned by Govt. Reasons for this are unknown, most probably will be revealed in the second part of the movie series. (This is only my assumption).

Now, Let’s talk about acting and character sketch. Protagonist Rocky played by actor Yash is the sole of the movie. His physique, attitude and dialogue delivery add to the mysterious nature of the character. Reena, the character opposite to Rocky, his love interest, played by Srinidhi has very less to do but she has done his job satisfactorily. (I am happy there were no unnecessary love songs in the movie). The most important and influential character was of Saraswathi (Rocky’s mother) played by Archana Jois, who helps to build the character from the very beginning. I was disappointed by the character sketch and styling of the antagonist called Garuda, played by Ramachandra Raju. The character was shallow and was made to look dangerous for no good reason and the styling was not good. We still remember villains like Gabber, Shekel, and Mogambo, but Garuda was not substantially developed.
In total, KGF Chapter -1 is wholesome entertainment and very fine and good storytelling and appreciable VFX which gives a thrilling experience to watch it. The background score adds to the story and gels well with the movie. I would surely recommend it to movie buffs. Eagerly waiting for KGF-Chapter 2.
